Poultry Farming Must Be Re-examined: WHO Summary
According to World Health Organization (WHO) Director, Dr. Margaret Chan, an increasing number of disease outbreaks, such as the avian flu, are coming from the farmed animal sector.
According to the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), the farmed animal industry should be re-examined, as an increasing number of diseases are emerging at a historically unprecedented rate of one per year, and more are spread from farmed animals.
According to Dr. Cho, some of this increase is due to better detection of disease from advanced scientific methodology, but some increase is also due to changes in farming methods. Dr. Cho is noted as saying, “The intensity of chicken farming is such that we really need to look at how the human animal interface is managed. It should not come as a surprise that we are seeing more and more disease outbreaks coming from the animal sector.”
Since 1967, 40 new pathogens have been identified and sourced from the farmed chicken and bird sectors.
