In a survey by Compassion in World Farming, they found that 28% of consumers are reducing their consumption of certain food items in response to the foot and mouth crisis in the U.K.
This Compassion in World Farming survey asked respondents whether or not they have changed their diet to eliminate certain animal foods as a result of the foot and mouth crisis in the United Kingdom.
The percentages of respondents eating less of the following as a result of foot and mouth crisis are:

- Lamb (14%)
- Pork (13%)
- Chicken (4%)
- Fish (2%)
- Salmon/Trout (3%)
- Vegetarian (2%)
- Other (3%)
- None (72%)
- Don’t Know (1%)
The percentages of respondents eating more of the following as a result of foot and mouth crisis are:
- Beef (2%)
- Lamb (2%)
- Pork (3%)
- Chicken (18%)
- Fish (18%)
- Salmon/Trout (7%)
- Vegetarian (13%)
- Other (4%)
- None (65%)

The reduction in eating land animals was almost equally offset by increase in fish consumption, although 13% would eat more vegetarian food.
