McDonald’s “Empirical Look At Becoming Vegan”
The author found that it is important to read vegan materials in order to maintain a vegan lifestyle.
MacNair’s 1998 survey suggested that for vegetarians who became so due to animal concerns, the initial impetus was more likely to be emotional. Those who’s primary motivation was health driven was more likely to have been persuaded by logic.
This author found that having multiple reasons is a common practice for vegetarians or vegans.
There is tension between those who practice and those who are critical of the practice, therefore seeking approval of the practice is important to maintaining vegetarianism.
Those who are concerned for animals are likely to also become concerned with health, as this is a defensive measure for avoiding social disapproval.
Also, those who start with health or environmental concerns will also add animal concerns to their motivation to reinforce their decision.
There are three common techniques to becoming vegetarian:
- The first is to make the decision to become vegetarian then phase out meat gradually.
- Next, there are those who suddenly decide to become vegetarian, but their meat consumption had already been declining over time.
- Lastly, there are those who suddenly go from large meat consumption to none.
