Survey: Why Some Choose Not To Eat Meat
This survey of vegetarians and vegans examined nine potential reasons to become vegetarian. The study found that there was not a single driving factor for becoming vegetarian among survey respondents; for most it was a multi-faceted decision.
Surveys were handed out at vegetarian festivals to people from 14 U.S. states. Respondents were asked to identify how important each of nine factors were for motivating them to become vegetarian. The reasons identified for not eating animals were (in the study’s wording):
- I am opposed to killing animals;
- I am concerned with health issues;
- I am concerned about residues of chemical feed additives and hormones;
- I am opposed to intensive, confinement systems;
- I am concerned with food safety issues;
- I believe that animal production competes with humans for grains;
- I am concerned about environmental issues;
- It is “cool” and trendy to be a vegetarian, and
- I became vegetarian because of peer pressure.
