The Real Cost Of Meat: Mapping The Impacts Of Meat Production
This report reviewed the recent evidence that meat production is unsustainable and a significant contributor to climate change. The authors suggested that the best solution to these problems is the promotion of vegetable protein consumption. The report concluded with several recommendations for the European Union Common Agricultural Policy Reform.
This report by the LAV reviewed the recent scientific literature regarding the various impacts of the meat production cycle. The production of meat has multiple negative impacts the environment, nonhuman animal health and welfare, and human health. Although meat production is a major contributor to climate change, this impact is not reflected in the EU Emissions Trading System.
The authors recommend moving towards a significant reduction in meat consumption, and suggest that the EU should be adapting their policies to reflect this shift. Some suggestions for the EU Common Agricultural Policy included ending subsidies that promote meat production, encouraging consumption of vegetable protein, abolishing industrial agriculture, and including animal products in policies that address climate change.
