The program “Journey to Planet Earth” was given 94% rating of excellent or very good, with most viewers paying heavy attention to the information on environmental issues.
According to the results of the viewer study:
- Overall assessments of the program were positive; 94% rated the program as “excellent” or “very good.” Participants favored segments that feature animals they connected to or found “fun” or “cute.”
- After viewing, participants planned to pay more attention to environmental science issues. Participants felt that the program was extremely effective in convincing them that there are significant threats to ocean animals.
- Knowledge about environmental issues increased after viewing; 80% reported a greater desire to learn about sea level rise and climate change after viewing the program.
Concerning the outreach initiative:
- Respondents reported on 23 outreach programs. On average there were 400 visitors per program and attendance ranged from 15 attendees to several thousand.
- Overall, outreach program staff believed that program goals were met.
Key recommendations from the study include:
- The continued use of video formats.
- Wider dissemination of the program.
- More explicit focus on topics where there is less knowledge among target viewers.
- Continued inclusion of stories of hope among those with more bleak endings.
- Consider the use of a content advisory to warn viewers of graphic images.
- Provide outreach sites with a report template to obtain comprehensive information on the outreach activity conducted.
- Initiate evaluation activities at program commencement to provide more thorough feedback.
