History And Ethics Of Keeping Companion Animals
This article examines the practice of keeping companion animals and the ethics of having animals in such a capacity, including whether or not keeping a companion animal in a house, pen, or cage is impeding on the animal’s right to express it’s intrinsic natural behavior.
Companion animals are typically kept within households or in capacities that are different than their otherwise natural habitats. This paper explores human practices and ethics behind the typical handling of companion animals such as bathing and grooming to analyze whether or these actions infringe upon the animals’ “telos.” The authors also discuss the implications that this may have for animals raised for agricultural purposes.
