Confident Consumers Still Spending On Meat: Surveys
A March 2011 online survey about the meat purchasing habits of 500 U.S. consumers finds that consumers are continuing to buy the cuts of meat that they normally have, rather than shifting to lower-cost meats or other foods.
These survey results show that retail meat prices have increased since 2010, which could have a diminishing effect on sales volume. These price increases are due in large part to significant increases in beef and pork exports. However, despite rising prices, consumers are continuing to purchase the cuts of beef, pork and chicken that they had previously; there has been no visible shift to lower-cost meats or other foods.
The previous January 2009 survey showed noticeable shifts in consumer purchases to lower value cuts, though the economy was comparably worse at that time.
