Mortality Among Retired Fur Workers: Dyers, Dressers (Tanners) and Service Workers
Though a great deal of literature has been written about the hazards of slaughterhouse work, the long term health impacts of other kinds of "animal processing" jobs are not as well known. This article looks at the health and mortality of workers in the fur industry, and shows that employment involving the dyes and chemicals used in the tanning process may increase mortality or the prevalence of certain diseases. The findings show that fur dressers had much higher than normal exposure to certain chemicals that can lead to an increase in deaths from lung cancer. READ MORE

Impact of Livestock on Giant Pandas and Their Habitat
The expansion of farming is changing the world and our environment in many ways; one of which is the significant alteration to the landscape. The expansion of grazing lands for farmed animals into the habitats of wild animals can have a profound effect on their ability to live naturally and find food. This study from Wolong Nature Reserve in China examines how domesticated horses grazing in areas of the park have impacted giant pandas living there. The research finds that as grazing lands for farmed animals expand, they push giant pandas out, and have a detrimental effect on the pandas' ability to survive and find food. READ MORE

There is often a deep disconnect and great variation in how we treat farmed, companion, and wild animals. Using a particular scene from Michael Moore's documentary Roger and Me as a starting point - a scene where backyard rabbits are sold as "pets or meat" - this article unpacks the ethics around our perceptions of the different categorizations of animals. Land, Irrigation Water, Greenhouse Gas, and Reactive Nitrogen Burdens of Meat, Eggs, and Dairy Production in the United States
The environmental consequences of our food choices are becoming more apparent as evidence emerges of animal agriculture's impact globally. This study looks specifically at the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in the production of dairy, and compares the outcome to other kinds of animal farming. The results show that, although dairy production generates less GHGs than the production of beef, it is comparable to the farming of chickens, pigs, and egg products. READ MORE

Rationalizing Meat Consumption: The 4Ns
As more evidence emerges that eating meat damages the environment, affects personal health, and causes suffering to animals, some people are finding it increasingly difficult to justify consuming it. This study looks at the psychological mechanisms that people employ to solve the "meat paradox" - continuing to eat meat despite a growing body of evidence that action should be taken to the contrary. International Survey: The Future is Animal Free
Fashion trends shift as quickly as the seasons change, but longer-term, larger trends can be mapped through research. A study of 3,600 consumers, conducted by ISPO for the Italian Fur Free Alliance, looked at the trend in buying and wearing animal-free clothing, across a number of countries in the European Union. The research finds that the options for animal-free clothing products are growing in popularity by almost all measures. In addition, they are also increasingly seen as "trendy," and preferable to animal-based alternatives. READ MORE

The Unbearable Whiteness of Milk: Food Oppression and the USDA
Despite the massive popularity of animal-derived foods as part of a typical North American diet, many of these food and drink consumables are heavily subsidized and reliant on marketing campaigns to sustain their prominence. This study looks at the political forces that promote and subsidize milk products, specifically the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and how its dual role as a nutrition advisor and milk promoter puts it in a deep conflict of interest.
