Food Recalls Spoiling Consumers’ Appetites For A Range Of Foods
Food recalls are having a significant impact on the food choices made by those in the U.S. More than half of consumers (57%) have stopped eating a particular food as the result of a recent recall, and 76% are currently more concerned about foods they eat than they were five years ago.
Major findings from the survey:
- 57% of U.S. consumers have temporarily or permanently stopped eating a particular food as the results of a recent food recall.
- 73% believe the number of food recalls has increased over the last year.
- 76% are more concerned about foods they eat than they were five years ago.
- 78% are most concerned about beef recalls, 67% about chicken recalls, 53% about fruit and vegetable recalls, and 53% about dairy recalls.
- 56% consider imported foods to be “not at all” or only “somewhat” safe.
- 80% believe that domestically produced foods are safe.
- 33% feel that fresh fish is “not at all” or only “somewhat” safe.
- 89% of Americans would like to see more fruits and vegetables from local farms sold in food stores, while 69% said they would pay slightly more for such items.
