Consumers Want Clearer Labeling, Country Of Origin Information On Foods Of All Types
Business consulting firm Deloitte’s survey of U.S. consumers found that, to improve their buying decisions, consumers want their foods to clearly display key information (including the food’s country of origin), even if this means additional cost to the consumer.
The top three food concerns specified by consumers include:
- Healthiness of ingredients (61%)
- Possible use of chemical ingredients that are detrimental to my health (49%)
- Safety of the ingredients (49%)
More than two out of five consumers feel that they do not have enough information about the food they eat, in general. Nearly three-fourths (73%) indicated that they would want country of origin labeling on their foods, even if caused the price of the food to increase slightly.
Nearly four out of five U.S. consumers (79%) believe that meat from cloned animals should be labeled a such. Half (50%) feel that this meat should not be sold in the United States at all.
