Animal Welfare: Consumer Viewpoints
This paper examines how public perceptions regarding animal welfare may be influenced by diverse factors including culture, economics, religion, philosophy, scientific knowledge, and aesthetics; the author recommends that industry take a lead on animal welfare (specifically, poultry production practices), even when the public is apathetic.
This article briefly summarizes previous studies regarding public perception of farmed animal welfare and consumer willingness to pay more for humanely raised animal products, as well as those analyzing the role of semantics in public perception of related practices. Various other surveys that measure perception of “animal rights” are also mentioned in the report.
The authors conclude that, in general, consumers express confidence in farmers and ranchers to make responsible decisions concerning animal welfare. Consumers also indicate that the humane treatment of farm animals is important, therefore the farming industry is responsible to consumers for making careful and informed decisions based on the welfare of laying hens.
