Using Motivation To Feed To Assess The Importance Of Space For Broiler Chickens
This article describes a combination of feeding motivation and spatial preference testing among broiler chickens. The feeding motivation test was used to determine a “low” barrier height that non-food deprived chickens would not cross to get to food and a “high” barrier height that food deprived chickens would cross to get food to determine the spatial preferences of chickens.
Birds showed their spatial preference by moving between two compartments with different stocking densities, separated by either a high or low barrier. The results of these tests show that broiler chickens indicated a preference for lower densities, a preference which appears to become even more pronounced with age.
