Shoppers Uneasy About Cloning For Meat And Milk
According to this 2005 poll, two-thirds of U.S. consumers are “uncomfortable” with animal cloning, and 43% believe that food from cloned animals would be unsafe to eat.
This poll conducted by the Pew Initiative asked, “As you may know, animal cloning is a technique used by animal breeders to make genetically identical copies of an adult animal. Do you feel comfortable or uncomfortable with animal cloning?”
- 66% were uncomfortable or strongly uncomfortable
- 24% were comfortable or strongly comfortable
In addition, 43% felt that food from clones would be unsafe, with 28% feeling strongly about that. 34% had no opinion on the safety question.
In another poll sponsored by ViaGen, Inc. a Texas cloning company, people were told that FDA was likely to declare cloned food safe, and then asked whether they would buy it or not. The results of this survey showed that 29% would consider buying the food while 35% said the would “never buy” such food.
