Meat Industry, Pro-Vegetarian Groups Compete For Young People’s Loyalties

This news article discusses the attitudes of youth toward vegetarianism and meat consumption based on interviews and recent polls.
According to the Vegetarian Resource Group, there is evidence that youth are becoming increasingly interested in vegetarianism.
A Teenage Research Unlimited survey found that 20% of all 12-19 year olds (and 28% of girls) consider vegetarianism to be “in.” In response to the growing youth interest in vegetarianism, the Cattleman’s Beef Association has created a website, Cool-2B-Real, which encourages self-confidence in girls, and also has beef recipes. According to the CBA, federal statistics show that girls 11 years and older lack many nutrients that are found in beef. PETA is responding with a youth-oriented campaign.
Some worry that in the debate over vegetarianism, the ultimate message that healthy eating is important, will be lost.
