Benefits And Barriers To The Consumption Of A Vegetarian Diet In Australia
The objective of this study was to examine the perceived benefits and barriers of a vegetarian diet to consumers.
The main perceived barriers to adopting a vegetarian diet were enjoying eating meat (78%) and an unwillingness to change dietary habits (56%). This was similarly felt by men and women and all age groups, although there were some differences. Women, for example, had a stronger family food preference, and older people were more likely to believe that humans were “meant” to eat meat.
The main benefits of a vegetarian diet were health, increased fruits and vegetables (74%), decreased saturated fat (65%), weight control (40%), and animal welfare (36%).
The majority of people poll believe that there are health benefits associated with a vegetarian diet, although most prefer to eat meat.
