2008 Canadian Animal Protection Laws Rankings
The U.S.-based Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) highlights the considerable differences that exist among animal protection laws in Canada by ranking every province and territory on the relative strength and general comprehensiveness of its animal protection laws.
The ALDF examination of animal welfare legislation that exists within Canadian provinces and territories ranks each region by comparing their overall strengths and comprehensiveness. The study issued the following rankings of Canadian Animal Protection Laws by area:
- Best – Manitoba
- Worst – Ontario
- Top Tier – British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan
- Middle Tier – Alberta, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Yukon
- Bottom Tier – Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Ontario, Quebec
The types of provisions analyzed include:
- Offenses
- Exemptions
- Penalties
- Mental health
- Cost-mitigation and recovery
- Entry/seizure/inspection
- Forfeiture and post-conviction possession
- Non-animal agency reporting of suspected animal cruelty
- Veterinarian reporting of suspected animal cruelty
- Immunity for assisting with cruelty investigations/reporting suspected cruelty
- Law enforcement policies
