UK: Higher Welfare Chicken Sales Higher Than Ever
Sales of “higher welfare” chicken in the United Kingdom are up 60% compared with 2007 data. Consequently, the grocery chain Sainsbury’s has launched a new higher welfare range of chicken products to meet the growing demand.
An estimated 38% of shoppers in the United Kingdom actively look for food that does not compromise when it comes to how it is sourced and limiting its impact on the environment.
“Higher welfare” chicken represented 14% of the grocery chain Sainsbury’s total chicken sales. With the launch of a new line of higher welfare chicken labeled Freedom Food (a program of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), nearly one third of all chicken sold at at Sainsbury’s will be higher welfare.
