Promoting Hunter Recruitment And Retention
Produced by the University of Wisconsin for the Hunters Network, this brochure provides an overview of the hunting industry in Wisconsin and presents strategies on how to preserve and promote this activity, due to the high economic contributions made to the state through hunting.
Wisconsin has over 600 hunting organizations dedicated to promotion of this activity, and this brochure recommends several strategies to encourage participation in hunting:
- Invite newcomers to the field.
- Provide hunting programs that focus on “hunting culture” beyond the technical skills.
- Provide ongoing social support.
- Emphasize health benefits of being outdoors.
- Focus on family togetherness.
- Understand why people hunt.
- Promote “the unique culture and values.”
- Share the harvest.
- Focus on hunters’ contributions to conservation.
In 2006, Wisconsin had 697,215 resident hunters who spent $1.4 billion within the state. Of this amount, $600 million went to the state economy, 25,298 jobs were supported, and more than $197 million went to state and local taxes.
