Future Images Of Meat Consumption In 2030
This paper examines thirty-nine Finnish experts’ views on the development of meat consumption and identifies possible factors affecting meat consumption in the future.
Meat consumption is anticipated to grow, although an increasing number of vegetarians and growing concern about the environment is likely to counteract the growth to some extent. This survey of Finnish experts found that meat consumption in Finland in the year 2030 will likely be 66 kg per year per person, with a median amount of 71 kg, on average.
Strategies suggested to further decrease meat consumption include:
- Aid the technological development of products that could replace animal-derived food items.
- Increase consumer knowledge about animal welfare and vegetarianism through ad campaigns.
- Make political decisions to transfer agricultural production away from meat production and promote the broadening of the selection of alternatives to meat products in stores.
- Place higher taxes on meat products.
