Green Giant Survey On American Eating Habits
Findings from the Green Giant survey:
- 53% of Americans eat less red meat than they did 5 years ago and 76% prepare at least one vegetarian meal per week at home
- 76% of supermarket shoppers practice some level of vegetarian behavior when they go food shopping
- 29% of food shoppers believe it’s necessary to eat meat every day
- 15% of college students eat a vegetarian meal a day and 90% of college cafeterias offer vegetarian dishes at every meal
Based on these findings, Green Giant is expanding it’s meatless Harvest Burger to mainstream grocery stores nationwide. Other food manufacturers are doing the same, for example Nestle has introduced four meatless entrees in it’s Stouffer’s Lean Cuisine line.
Food processors target different types of vegetarians including Vegans, pesco-vegetarians, and lacto-ovo-vegetarians.
There are an estimated 12.4 million Americans, or 6.7% of the population who consider themselves to be vegetarians of some sort.
