Consumers Want Hormone-Free Milk Labels
According to this 2007 national poll, 80% of American consumers believe that milk produced without the hormone rBGH should be allowed to to be labeled as such.
This survey of 1,000 U.S. adults asked:
“Some milk comes from cows that have been treated with an artificial growth hormone called rBGH to increase their milk production. Other milk comes from cows that have NOT been treated with the hormone rBGH. Some people want to label dairy products according to whether or not they are from cows that have been treated with rBGH. What do you think? Should milk from cows that have NOT been treated with the hormone rBGH be allowed to be labeled as ‘rBGH free,’ or should that not be allowed?”
- Allowed to be labeled rBGH-free (80%)
- NOT allowed to be labeled rBGH-free (15%)
- Don’t know (5%)
Support for allowing rBGH-free labeling includes:
- 78% of men
- 82% of women
- 83% of whites
- 80% of Latinos
- 66% of African Americans
Support for allowing rBGH-free labeling measures 66% or above across all demographic groups.
The use of rBGH was approved by the U.S. government in 1994.
