Consumers Want Antibiotic-Free Meat: Poll
This study investigated the availability of antibiotic-free meat options in U.S. supermarkets and attitudes towards the use of antibiotics in raising animals for food. The results showed that most consumers are worried about the overuse of antibiotics, and many were concerned about antibiotics being used to facilitate the raising of animals in factory farming conditions. This study shows that people are concerned with safety of their food and the welfare of animals, which is useful information for animal advocates as they decide how to best promote a meat-free diet.
This study by Consumer Reports examined the availability of antibiotic-free meat in US supermarkets, and measured attitudes towards the overuse of antibiotics in raising animals for food. Shoppers surveyed 136 supermarkets on the availability of antibiotic-free meat. The availability of antibiotic-free meat varied widely, with some stores selling only antibiotic-free meat, and others having no antibiotic-free options. The large majority of consumers felt uneasy about the excessive use of antibiotics in animals raised for food and most thought antibiotic-free meat should be available in nearby supermarkets. Most consumers would also pay a small additional amount for antibiotic-free meat.
