AP Finds 5K Horse Deaths Since 2003

Data collected in the U.S. has found that 5,000 thoroughbred horses died due to racing between 2003 and 2008 and on average more than three horses die every day on race tracks.
This is the first known study that attempted to compile information on the number of thoroughbred horses that die on racetracks in the U.S. Overall, there were 5,000 thoroughbred deaths due to racing between 2003 and mid-2008.
Data was collected by analyzing responses to inquires sent to organizations governing horse racing the in 29 states with the most thoroughbred horses racing in 2007. In all there were more than three horse deaths per day on thoroughbred race tracks in 2007.
In California, there was a 50% increase in the number of thoroughbred racing deaths from 2003 to 2005. In 2005 there were 314 horse deaths on race tracks, 261 of them thoroughbreds.
