2010 Top Ten Worst Zoos For Elephants
Based on the welfare policies and living conditions of the elephants housed within each zoo, In Defense of Animals (IDA) compiled a list of the top ten worst zoos for elephants; the three worst ranking zoos are the San Antonio Zoo, the Edmonton Valley Zoo, and the Buttonwood Park Zoo.
The In Defense of Animals (IDA) list of the Top Ten Worst Zoos for Elephants includes:
- San Antonio Zoo (Texas) – based on treatment of elephants
- Edmonton Valley Zoo (Alberta, Canada) – solitary confinement, lack of space, cold climate
- Buttonwood Park Zoo (Massachusetts) – focused on revenues generated
- Central Florida Zoo (Florida) – solitary confinement
- Niabi Zoo (Illinois) – history of health conditions
- Topeka Zoo (Kansas) – lack of space, harsh climate
- Honolulu Zoo (Hawaii) – does not meet minimal standards from Association of Zoos and Aquariums
- Wildlife Safari (Oregon) – lack of respect for elephants
- TIE: York’s Wild Kingdom Zoo (Maine) / Southwick’s Zoo (Massachusetts) – health and safety
- Pittsburgh Zoo’s ICC (Pennsylvania) – poor conditions, lack of access to water or enrichment activities
