YouGov / League Against Cruel Sports Survey Results
This March 2010 survey examined public attitudes toward various forms of animal fighting, finding that the majority of British adults are opposed to animal baiting, but many do not know the actual laws. Among the findings of this report, 92% of the British public think dog fighting should be illegal, while 76% believe that it is already illegal. More than two-thirds (69%) think that a prison sentence is the most appropriate punishment for the offense of dog fighting.
In other findings, 89% of British adults believe that badger baiting (where a dog and badger fight) should be illegal, while two-thirds believe badger baiting is currently illegal. More than three-fourths (78%) think that terrier work (where a dog is set on a fox underground) should be illegal, while about one-third think that it is currently illegal.
These survey results also showed that Londoners are less opposed to blood sports than others in Great Britain; 87% of Londoners think dog fighting should be illegal, compared with 93% of the rest of the country; 84% of Londoners think badger baiting should be illegal, compared with 90% of others; and 72% of Londoners think terrier work should be illegal, versus 79% of others.
