Entrenching animal welfare standards into policy is often the result of a long legislative process. And evaluating the impact of these changes can take just as much effort. This study looks at the implementation of different animal welfare policies in the EU, and asks various stakeholders, from farmers to consumers, their opinions on how effective, efficient, and useful the different welfare measures are. The findings show that there is a delicate balance between what NGOs and consumers want, and that sometimes there is a disconnect between NGOs' priorities and what consumers see as important issues. READ MORE

Climate Benefits of Changing Diet
In the wake of the UN's publication of the groundbreaking report Livestock's Long Shadow in 2006, scientists have sought to better understand the role that factory farming plays in climate change. This study uses computer models to explore the potential impact of different dietary transitions, from simply reducing red meat consumption to becoming vegan, and analyzed how each might affect carbon cycles, land use, and more. Fall 2013 Humane Education Study Analysis
Humane education presentations are an increasingly popular way for animal advocates to introduce young people to issues related to animals. Studies are being conducted into the efficacy of humane education presentations aimed at different age groups and within various contexts. This research looked at nearly 170 U.S. students exposed to a humane education presentation at their school, and explored the effects that the presentation might have had on their consumption of animal products. The study found that humane education programs aimed at students cannot affect change on their own, and that this age group, which still lives at home with their families, are likely to be strongly influenced by their living constraints. READ MORE

Study on Activity Pattern and Incidence of Stereotypic Behavior in Captive Tigers
This study from India looks at the housing of captive tigers at Nandankanan Zoological Park. It sought to evaluate the tigers' welfare conditions by recording measurements of their stereotypical behaviors, such as pacing and repetitive circling. The researchers looked at how 19 captive tigers spent their time living in the zoo, specifically seeing when circling and pacing was most pronounced, and evaluating their findings. The study shows that, even in habitats which are considered "enriched" or made to seem more naturalistic, tigers still exhibit sterotypies that indicate they are living in poor welfare conditions. READ MORE

Does the Attachment System Towards Owners Change in Aged Dogs?
The bond between humans and dogs has been well studied, yet researchers are always looking to explore new angles of the relationship to deepen our understanding. In this study, the authors examined the emotional bonds between older dogs and their human companions, to explore the type of attachment and see how it compares to bonds formed by younger dogs. Using a modified version of the "Strange Situation Test" and a salival cortisol sampling, the researchers looked at 50 dog/human groups, and found that aged dogs cope less efficiently with emotional distress. READ MORE
