Almost 50% of Ontario women who had left their abusive partner, said that concern for the safety of companion animal delayed their decision to leave their abusive partner.
A survey of abused women from Ontario, Canada highlights the link between the abuse of animals and current and potential future violence toward humans. The results are provided in this press release from the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association.
Survey findings:
- 48% of surveyed Ontario women who had left their abusive partner said that (concern for the safety of) their companion animals delayed their decision to leave an abusive partner.
- 61% of surveyed Ontario women who had left their abusive partner stated that their partners had brutalized or killed a companion animal.
