How Is Life In The Big City? Tokyo’s First Feline Survey
The Tokyo metropolitan government’s first survey on cat habitation (conducted in 1998) estimates the cat population to be about 1.2 million in Tokyo. 600,000 of these cats were indoor house cats and the remaining 560,000 were outdoor cats, including 110,00 stray cats.
According to this survey, there were 1.16 million cats in the Tokyo metropolitan area, some 1.05 million which were companion animals, which is equivalent to one cat for every 4.5 households. The number of dogs living in the same area was measured at 288,000.
52.5% of cat owners keep their cats indoors. 51.5% of owners use some kind of identification on their cats, but of those who keep outdoor cats, only 28.6% use identification.
99% of indoor cats are litter box trained, compared with less than 15% of outdoor cats.
