European Shoppers Will Buy More Ethical Food And Drink
An IGD survey of European consumers finds that nearly half (49%) of shoppers from four European countries expect to buy more “ethical” food and grocery products in the future. The types of ethical purchases most frequently planned for purchase in the future include local foods (35%), Fairtrade (24%), animal welfare (24%), and organic (21%).
This research surveyed shoppers from Great Britain, Germany, France, and Spain. In reference to animal welfare, 28% of British shoppers expect to buy products with higher animal welfare standards in the future, while 30% of French shoppers, 10% of Spanish shoppers, and 8% of German shoppers feel similarly.
By country, consumers also anticipated future purchases of other “ethical” foods:
- Local and regional foods: British (38%), French (35%), German (30%), Spanish (15%)
- Fairtrade products: British (31%), French (24%), German (10%), Spanish (7%)
- Organic: French (20%), German (18%), British (9%), Spanish (7%)
