Half Of China’s Antibiotics Are Fed To Animals
According to a 2010 survey by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, industrial feed contains large amounts of antibiotics, hormones, and other drugs; 50% of the farmers surveyed said they have mixed antibiotics and other drugs into animal feeds.
A significant increase in antibiotic resistance among the Chinese population has been noted in recent years, likely due at least in part due to the common practice of farmers mixing antibiotics and other drugs into animal feed by hand to protect animals from possible infections and diseases. Industry experts believe that food animals are being given too many antibiotics.
China produced 210,000 tons of crude antibiotics per year, with more than 46% of this production used in the farmed animal industry. Approximately half of all farmers surveyed said they mix antibiotics or other drugs into animal feeds. Antibiotic resistance is a more significant problem in China than in other countries.
