EU Salmonella Egg Rules Risk Future Of EU Egg Industry
An opinion poll conducted at a European poultry technical seminar found that nearly a third of nutritionists, veterinarians, and other industry experts believe that the European Union (EU) program to reduce salmonella contamination in eggs and poultry flocks will put the competitiveness of EU poultry producers at risk.
More than 60 delegates and speakers attending Alltech’s poultry technical seminar participated in this survey. Nearly half felt that feed prices would decrease significantly over the next year, 10% believe the will stay the same, and 37% believe they will increase further.
Concerning the conventional (battery) cage ban, only minorities of respondents think it would pose a problem; 27% believe the ban would reduce egg quality, 18% said it would lead to increased mortality, and 10% felt that the ban would result in reduced laying performance.
