Diets And Selected Lifestyle Practices Of Adult Vegetarians
This study of a health registry completed by self-defined vegetarians and non-vegetarians broadly concluded that vegetarians are more “health conscious” than non-vegetarians.
Approximately 6% of respondents stated they were vegetarian, though they did not adhere to an entirely flesh-free diet. Vegetarians were more likely to be female (71%), single, of lower-income status, and younger. Female vegetarians had lower BMI’s than non-vegetarians, while male vegetarians and non-vegetarians had similar BMIs.
Females vegetarians were more physically active, while male vegetarians were more likely to use nutritional supplements. Vegetarians were more likely than non-vegetarians to consider health conditions and food/nutrition concerns when selecting foods.
