Chicken Vaccines Combine To Produce Deadly Virus
In Australia, it appears that two vaccines given to chickens have recombined to form new deadly virus strains. This disease causes severe respiratory problems and suffering in chickens, and farmers regularly use these vaccines to prevent economic losses. However, it appears that the careless use of multiple vaccines in the same animals has resulted in new virus strains that are now killing large numbers of chickens.
This study investigates one of the first cases of a disease outbreak in chickens believed to be caused by the recombination of live attenuated vaccines. Two vaccines originating from Australia were previously used to treat the herpesvirus infectious laryngotracheitis virus in chickens. In 2006, a new vaccine from Europe was introduced. Following the introduction of this vaccine, new virulent strains of the virus were reported.
The authors compared the genome sequences of the new virus strains with the vaccines in current use. The results indicated that there were significant similarities between the new virus strains and the European and Australian vaccines. This similarity implies that the new deadly virus strains were formed by a recombination of the two vaccines.
