Canadian Study Exposes Drug-Resistant Bacteria In Supermarket Chicken

A study of 100 poultry products found that Canadian chicken is contaminated 67% of the time with harmful bacteria and many of these were resistant to antibiotics.

According to an investigation by CBC TV’s Marketplace, chicken products purchased in Canadian supermarkets are frequently contaminated with harmful bacteria and also surprisingly resistant to antibiotics.

Analysis of 100 poultry product samples from supermarket chains in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal found that 67% had bacteria including E. coli, salmonella, and campylobacter. However, even more surprising, researchers found that all of the bacteria was resistant to at least one antibiotic, and some were resistant to as many as eight different types of antibiotics. Researchers speculate that this resistance could be the result of an overabundance of antibiotics being given to chickens to keep them healthy and speed up the growth process.
