Average Dog Owner “Gets More Exercise Than Gym-Goers”
Research conducted in 2009 by companion animal health care experts finds that on average, British dog owners spend a considerable amount of time walking their dogs; the typical companion animal owner exercises their companion animal for a total of five hours and 38 minutes per week.
According to this 2009 survey, the average dog owner takes their dog out on three walks per week for a total of two hours and 33 minutes, in addition to the average daily exercise sessions which add up to another five hours and 38 minutes per week. In comparison, the average non-companion animal owner spends about 1 hour and 20 minutes exercising each week at the gym or otherwise, while 47% of non-companion animal owners do not exercise at all.
In this study of 5,000 people, including 3,000 dog owners, 57% of total respondents said that walking their dog is their main form of exercise; three quarters said they prefer to walk their dog than exercise in a gym.
Many (85%) enjoy walking their dog each day, while a considerably smaller number (22%) view this task as a chore. However, very few (16%) said they enjoy going to the gym, most (70%) view this is a chore.
