Societal Perspectives And The Path To Permanent Change
Over the past 200 years, animal welfare principles have changed to provide animals with a protection they once did not have. Organizations have been created to protect animals from those who violate laws and cause unnecessary pain and suffering. This thesis discusses several animal-related crimes and examines the relationship between animal cruelty and other crimes.
This paper gives an historical perspective on how animals were treated from past to present, laying out several theories that provide characteristics regarding why some members of society disregard the protection of animals and also demonstrating a connection between animal abuse and other crimes. In general, the evidence shows that people who harm animals also harm humans and there is a need for prosecution and the prevention of animal cruelty to protect humans and society.
The author recommends two laws to drastically reduce the number of animals euthanized each year. The first is to require that all pet owners must spay or neuter their animal before it reaches six months of age, with an exception for licensed breeders. The second law is to require all pet owners to have their animals micro-chipped, making every owner accountable for every domestic pet.
