According to data collected by the National Animal Ethics Council (NAEC), more than 318,000 animals were experimented on in New Zealand in 2006, which is an increase of more than 20% over the previous year. Of these animals, more than 5% suffered at “severe” or “very severe” levels.
Most of the animals were rodents used to test animal health products. According to the NAEC committee chairman, the principal purpose of testing in 2006 was animal husbandry, basic biological research and veterinary research.
