In New Zealand, veterinarians are extensively involved in animal welfare policy, including the development of educational initiatives across a number of sectors including farming and companion animals. This 1994 paper summarizes veterinarians’ involvement in animal welfare policy and presents the results of a 1994 survey on animal welfare issues and attitudes.

New Zealand veterinarians frequently interact with animal welfare advocates and the public. This is important to their involvement in animal welfare policy and practice in the country. Consequently, this paper includes a definition of animal welfare and a description of veterinary training that relates to the optimization of animal welfare.
