U.S. Beef Demand Drivers And Enhancement Opportunities
Based on national, quarterly data, this report examined beef demand and the effect of multiple information indices to link different health concerns with diet, changes in household dynamics, and meat recall information. The results indicate that beef demand is sensitive to the strength of the U.S. economy, and also to information about beef and nutrition.
In this study, researchers identified several factors that influence demand for beef in the United States. For example, publications in medical journals that link iron, zinc, and protein with health and diet tend to increase beef demand, whereas publications that discuss fat, cholesterol, and other dietary concerns tend to reduce beef demand. In addition, these results also suggest that as U.S. consumers want more convenient products, beef demand suffers and poultry demand benefits. Likewise, eating away from the home also appears to decrease the overall demand for beef.
