Study on Activity Pattern and Incidence of Stereotypic Behavior in Captive Tigers
This study from India looks at the housing of captive tigers at Nandankanan Zoological Park. It sought to evaluate the tigers' welfare conditions by recording measurements of their stereotypical behaviors, such as pacing and repetitive circling. The researchers looked at how 19 captive tigers spent their time living in the zoo, specifically seeing when circling and pacing was most pronounced, and evaluating their findings. The study shows that, even in habitats which are considered "enriched" or made to seem more naturalistic, tigers still exhibit sterotypies that indicate they are living in poor welfare conditions. READ MORE

Estimates of Illegal and Unreported Fish in Seafood Imports to the USA
This study looks at the prevalence and impact of illegal and unreported (IU) fishing on the U.S. market, specifically, "a new effort to study and quantify the dimensions of the problem from the perspective of the United States as a major seafood market." Researchers looked at a wide range of sources to estimate the percentages of IU fish that enter the U.S. market, and also provide a breakdown as to how the IU fishing of different species fits into the overall picture. What results is a situation that demands attention from both policy-makers and consumers to rectify. READ MORE

Factors Determining the Choice of Hunting and Trading Bushmeat in the Kilombero Valley, Tanzania
A study published in Conservation Biology, in which the authors spoke with 325 actors involved directly in the bushmeat trade in Tanzania, offers interesting insight into possible factors that might contribute to a reduction in bushmeat hunting, trade, and consumption. Researchers found that options such as alternative employment in jobs with comparable daily salary, or giving hunters animals for farming purposes, were potentially more effective than heavy fines or increased enforcement. READ MORE

Illegal Killing for Ivory Drives Global Decline in African Elephants
The authors of this study applied both empirical and modeling approaches to track illegal elephant killing at a regional and continental level. 75% of sites showed a population decline since 2009. Research into causes of a diminished (but still unsustainable) rate of killing since 2011 may provide insights into effective strategies to reduce the illegal ivory trade, which has created havoc with elephant family structures, skewing sex ratios, and increasing the orphaning of calves. READ MORE
