Observation of six cows with acute endotoxin mastitis and analysis of milk samples from each, led a team of researchers to conclude that cows do not exhibit typical sickness behavior like lying down. Instead, when inflicted with this condition, the cows spent less time lying down and more time eating silage. These cows also ruminated less frequently and drank less when the udder was significantly swollen, leading researchers to conclude that pain in the udder overrides the "motivational state" of the cow's illness behavior. READ MORE
