In U.S., Concern About Environmental Threats Eases
Concern in the U.S. over environmental issues has been mounting over the last few decades, despite there being considerable political controversy over certain aspects. This broad survey from Gallup finds that, for the first time in many years, Americans have decreased their level of concern overall. The research also finds that, as in previous years, people in the U.S. show more concern over issues of pollution and drinking water, than they do about broader international issues such as global warming or climate change. READ MORE

Living Planet Report, 2014
The WWF's Living Planet Report uses something called the Living Planet Index (LPI) to track changes in biodiversity globally. The 2014 report shows a huge decline in LPI between 1970 and 2010, with oceans and freshwater species declining rapidly.  READ MORE

Climate Benefits of Changing Diet
In the wake of the UN's publication of the groundbreaking report Livestock's Long Shadow in 2006, scientists have sought to better understand the role that factory farming plays in climate change. This study uses computer models to explore the potential impact of different dietary transitions, from simply reducing red meat consumption to becoming vegan, and analyzed how each might affect carbon cycles, land use, and more. Study on Activity Pattern and Incidence of Stereotypic Behavior in Captive Tigers
This study from India looks at the housing of captive tigers at Nandankanan Zoological Park. It sought to evaluate the tigers' welfare conditions by recording measurements of their stereotypical behaviors, such as pacing and repetitive circling. The researchers looked at how 19 captive tigers spent their time living in the zoo, specifically seeing when circling and pacing was most pronounced, and evaluating their findings. The study shows that, even in habitats which are considered "enriched" or made to seem more naturalistic, tigers still exhibit sterotypies that indicate they are living in poor welfare conditions. READ MORE

Animal Reintroductions: An Innovative Assessment of Survival
In an effort to help bolster ecosystems and species struggling to survive, scientists use a variety of tools to help species rebuild. However, success with relocation, repatriation, translocation, and reintroduction programs is still varied. In this study, researchers attempt to show how quantitative measurements of reintroduction can help to evaluate the success or failure of programs aimed at helping species survive and thrive, using tadpoles and toads in the Rocky Mountain National Park as a case study. READ MORE

A Global Gap Analysis of Sea Turtle Protection Coverage
This study takes a global look at sea turtle nesting sites and compares them to maps of protected areas to determine gaps in coverage. Paying special attention to developing countries, or countries in active geopolitical conflict, the study gives a view of sea turtle protection that reaches beyond simply identifying gaps, to better understand why those gaps might exist. The results of the study show that many countries protect only a fraction of their nesting sites, and that more regional and international support is needed to help protect sea turtles in developing countries or those engaged in active conflict. READ MORE

Journey From Wilderness: Facing Dilemmas of Wild Animal Exhibits
In this prose-like journal article, Ken Kawata outlines the common history of zoos and circuses, and describes their relationship to the capture and trade of exotic species from Africa and elsewhere. He explains in detail how the trade and transport of animals for public exhibition has been made logistically easier over the years, and shows the evolution of animal exhibitions from relatively crude caged exhibits to more sophisticated displays attempting a more "natural" appearance. The piece encourages readers not to see zoos and circuses as cultural relics, but rather to understand how their present existence is situated historically. Though he recognizes that zoos and circuses are un-natural settings for animals, his opinion is generally pro-zoo and anti-animal rights, describing anti-zoo activism as "extremist." READ MORE
