79% of U.K. respondents believe that keeping primates as companion animals should be made illegal.
Research conducted for the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) shows widespread support in the United Kingdom for making having primates as companion animals an illegal act.
Respondents were asked, “Now a question about wild animals, in particular primates — all of which are threatened in the wild. Primates include monkeys, apes and lemurs. At present, it is legal in the UK to breed and keep primates as pets. Do you think the keeping of primates as pets in the UK should remain legal, or should it be made illegal?”
- 3% – I strongly feel it should remain legal to keep primates as pets
- 5% – I tend to feel it should remain legal to keep primates as pets
- 9% – I have no opinion either way
- 21% – I tend to feel it should be made illegal to keep primates as pets
- 58% – I strongly feel it should be made illegal to keep primates as pets
- 3% – Don’t know
- 9% – Total: Remain legal
- 79% – Total: Be made illegal
