This survey, sponsored by HunterSurvey.com and AnglerSurvey.com, finds that over 57% of respondents believe that western gray wolf populations have recovered and should be removed from the Endangered Species List. 7% do not believe they should be removed from the list while 36% do not know.
The gray wolf population in the United States is a point of contention among many, as some believe populations of the species now exceed expectations, calling for their removal from the Endangered Species Act, while some disagree. In addition, there is some level of distrust over the motivations behind animal welfare groups’ opposition to delisting the gray wolf; 65% believe that these groups are motivated by a desire to limit hunting, while 40% believe animal welfare groups are doing so to boost membership and donations. A smaller 16% believe that these groups are acting out of genuine concern for the species.
Sportsman, however, are concerned that growing wolf populations negatively impact elk, moose, and deer populations within their range; 68% think wolves negatively affect ungulates, while 34% believe that the influence of wolves is beneficial.
