Companion Animals Really Are Members Of The Family
This survey of U.S. adults finds that three out of five people in the U.S. live with at least one companion animal. Among other findings, the study reports that dogs are the most popular companion animals, almost all people with companion animals (91%) consider them family members, and women are more likely than men to live with a companion.
Study Highlights:
- Among those who live with companion animals, 69% live with dogs, 51% with cats, 11% with fish, and 7% with birds.
- Over half (57%) of all companion animal owners allow their companion animal to sleep in their bed.
- Most people (83%) have never taken their companion animal to work with them.
- Gen X’ers (aged 35-46) are most likely to have a companion animal, while people over the age of 65 are least likely.
- Men (85%) are less likely than women (95%) to consider their companion animal a family member.
- About a quarter of respondents with companion animals have cooked specifically for their companion animal.
