New Poll Finds Five-To-One Margin Of Support For Humane Treatment Of Veal Calves In New Jersey
Asks New Jersey residents if they would support legislation requiring farmers involved in veal production in the state to meet certain standards in how veal calves are raised.
Poll question asks “A bill has been introduced in the New Jersey Legislature which would require that calves who are raised for veal be given stalls with enough space to turn around in and a diet with enough iron and fiber to maintain their health. Do you support or oppose this proposal?”

“Some veal farmers claim that this legislation would increase their costs and lower the market value of their veal. Do you still support this proposal even if it might lower some veal farmers’ earnings, are you less likely to support it, or do you now oppose the bill?”

The total support for veal treatment legislation after consideration of costs to producers was:
- 50% same support
- 14 % support but weaker
- 20% oppose
- 16% don’t know
The 5 to 1 support of humane veal treatment comes from Democrats (72%-14%), Republicans (72%-17%), and Independents (74%-15%). Support is particularly high in rural areas (72%).
