Kings Of The Carnivores: Who Eats The Most Meat?
This graphic depicts levels of meat consumption by country. It was compiled by The Economist, based off of 2007 data from the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation. Of the 177 countries for which data is available, people ate the most meat in Luxembourg, followed by the United States.
Since 1961, meat consumption per person, worldwide has risen from about 35 lbs per person to about 88 lbs. In 1961 cow was the most popular type of animal meat to eat worldwide but in 2007 pig has become the most popular with 218,257 million lbs eaten worldwide. Consumption of poultry animals is also on the rise, from 12% of total meat consumption worldwide to 31%.
Per person meat consumption overall is highest in Luxembourg, followed by the United States, Australia, New Zealand, then Spain. The least amount of meat is eaten in India, with an average of about 7 lbs eaten per person in 2007.
