Impact Of Meat Recall Beginning To Show
The Westland/Hallmark Beef recall has resulted in a cost of more than $1.1 million to California for the destruction of tainted meat products. In California, more than 4.2 million pounds of beef and 155,000 cases of processed foods were recalled.
Of the 143 million pounds of beef recalled following the Westland/Hallmark investigation, much has already been consumed at the time of recall. However, canned meat products may be on shelves for years. The final costs of handling the recall may end up in the hundreds of millions.
In California, specifically, almost 15,000 retailers, restaurants, schools, hospitals and others received Westland/Hallmark beef or products containing the beef.
