How Many Youth Are Veg*n?
This 2010 survey of U.S. youths (ages 8-18) by the Vegetarian Resource Group indicates that 7% say they never eat meat, while 3% are vegetarian (never eat meat, poultry, or fish). The survey indicates that approximately 1% of youths are vegan, depending on the inclusion of honey.
This survey found that about one-third of younger vegetarians (1% of the U.S. youth population) are vegans, claiming that they never eat dairy, eggs, and honey. About the same number said they are vegan except for honey. Therefore the total population of U.S. youths considered either vegan or vegan except for honey equals 2% of the total U.S. youth population.
Overall, the youth vegetarian population in the U.S. is about 1.4 million, while about three million never eat meat (but may eat poultry or fish/seafood.
